SUMERIT 2P

SUMERIT 2P is a 2-channel automatic irrigation controller and sensor node and supports up to two DUL sensors of any kind, including the APAS T1 substrate moisture sensor. The SUMERIT 2P comes with a control port, which allows for irrigation scheduling by turning a valve or small pump on/off based on soil moisture sensor signal. It comes in two models: 2P-BLE (basic), and 2P-BLED (datalogger). The 2P-BLE model works as a Bluetooth-enabled irrigation controller. The 2P-BLED model is also capable of functioning as a standalone datalogger. The SUMERIT 2P-BLE relies on the Bluetooth Low Energy (not to be confused with Classic Bluetooth) technology for short range wireless data transmission. Both SUMERIT models can be used in combination with our SHUSHAN CVI software for easy configuration, and computer-based visualization and irrigation control. They can also be used in combination with our SHUSHAN Mobile app for Android.

Plug and Play with DurUntash Sensors

The SUMERIT 2P is compatible with all DurUntash sensors. Just plug your sensors into the device and it will take care of the rest! The SUMERIT 2P automatically detects DurUntash Lab sensors connected to its ports and can be operated out of the box with its default settings. It has an updatable firmware meaning that future sensor models will also be supported with a simple firmware update using the SHUSHAN CVI-Wireless application for Windows.

Relies on Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth has  Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) versions. Bluetooth Low Energy (available in Android 4.3 and later) is an ultra-low power version of Bluetooth meant for low cost, low power sensor and IoT applications, in which continuous connection is not required, but long battery life is a priority. The SUMERIT 2P node is built around Bluetooth Low Energy.

Works with Android Devices

The SUMERIT 2P comes with the SHUSHAN Mobile app for Android. The app displays real-time sensor readings, irrigation status, and also sensor and device metadata (serial number, firmware version, etc). The SUMERIT is a datalogger by nature. You can also use the app to turn your smartphone into a datalogger! Sensor data will be stored directly on your phone in a 'csv' file format along with GPS coordinates and timestamp. You can also manually choose and save specific sensor readings on your phone. The app also allows for sending new irrigation scheduling settings (dry threshold, run time, etc) to the node and manually turn a valve (or small pump) on/off.

Install Multiple Bluetooth Nodes and Give each a Unique Name

Multiple SUMERIT 2P nodes can  be permanently installed in different spots in the field, orchard, greenhouse or grow operation. Using the SHUSHAN mobile app, you can give each node a unique alphanumeric name like "PlantPot101". You can then use the SHUSHAN Mobile app to connect to each of these different nodes (one node at a time) using their unique name.

Soil Moisture-based Irrigation Scheduling

We wanted a reliable irrigation controller that we could use to carry out automatic irrigation scheduling. Calendar-based irrigation scheduling using "timers" either wastes a lot of water or does not apply enough. You may even see them working when it is raining or the soil is so wet. Adding a soil moisture signal can make a lot of difference in irrigation scheduling when a reliable soil moisture sensor is used!

There are no commercial controllers that can accept soil moisture feedback from a [reliable] moisture sensor, and definitely none that works with a "reliable" sensor that is designed and optimized for soilless media like rockwool or coco coir, and relies on a reliable irrigation scheduling "algorithm".

We have designed SUMERIT for both indoor and outdoor automation. It relies on the APAS T1 substrate moisture sensor for the signal. The SUMERIT accepts commands via its USB port and over Bluetooth, and can even join a larger system as a control and monitoring node.

Two sensor ports to deal with variability
One of the biggest issues with substrate/soil based irrigation scheduling using sensors is the so called "inconsistent" readings due to non-uniformity within the substrate and sensor installation errors.

The SUMERIT irrigation node relies on the average of moisture readings from two APAS T1 substrate moisture sensors as feedback rather than just one to effectively deal with the variability.

Please read this blog article to learn how to setup an automatic irrigation system using the SUMERIT node and moisture sensors.

Simple Protocol for Communication with Computer or Raspberry Pi

In applications where data needs to sent to a third party software or hardware, the user can communicate with the SUMERIT 2P-BLE using simple command lines. Popular single-board computers and microcontroller boards such as the Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone and Arduino among others, can easily obtain measurements from the SUMERIT 2P via its USB port.

Rechargeable Battery

The SUMERIT 2P is equipped with a rechargeable Li-ion battery that can power the unit for months (time varies depending on the logging interval,  type, irrigation scheduling and number of sensors) of continuous use with a single charge. Battery voltage is monitored and logged by the data logger as a separate parameter. Any standard charger providing 100 mA @ 5.0 V with micro USB cable type B can be used to recharge the battery.

As an option, we also offer a mini solar panel with micro USB cable to plug into the data logger and charge the battery whenever there is a light source. The solar charger provides much more juice than the data logger consumes at its peak of power usage, so the logger can survive months of low light conditions or cloudy days very easily. Alternatively, any regular or solar powered USB banks can recharge the battery while being used.

Dedicated Monitoring and Configuration Software

To give the user the best experience, we have developed a graphical user interface called SHUSHAN CVI to work with the SUMERIT 2P. Here are some of the features of the SHUSHAN CVI:

Logging and Monitoring of Soil Moisture, EC & Temperature

The SHUSHAN CVI works together with our SUMERIT 2P node and DurUntash Lab sensors (e.g. APAS T1 soil water moisture sensor, or HITA E0 electrical conductivity probe) to log and visualize  measurements in real-time. Recorded data are available in text format and can be easily exported to a spreadsheet like Excel.

Configuration Utility

The SHUSHAN CVI can be used to  upload new settings and calibration coefficients into the data logger, and DurUntash Lab sensors.

Software Calibration and Temperature Compensation

By default, the SUMERIT 2P node automatically applies calibration coefficients to sensor readings to compensate for temperature change and to account for the soil type. As an option, the SHUSHAN CVI can be used to apply extra layers of calibration and compensation to measurements in real-time.

Easy Pole or Wall Mount

The SUMERIT 2P node comes with all the required hardware accessories that allow it be used in a tabletop configuration or two different wall-mount configurations. Additional hardware (pole mounting brackets) is available upon order to mount the node securely to a pole.

Applications

Moisture and temperature are recognized as important variables that influence plant productivity in both agricultural and natural ecosystems. Continuous monitoring of soil/substrate moisture is very important in different areas of science and engineering such as hydrology, soil science, geotechnical, ecology, meteorology, agronomy and controlled environment agriculture. Accurate soil moisture measurements are necessary tools in precision irrigation and water management. Substrate temperature is also a useful parameter in monitoring crop growth and can also be used for correcting moisture measurements. Soil moisture measurements can be used by farmers and researchers to determine water deficit and to specify the amount of water needed by plants.
