How to Measure Rockwool Moisture Content Using Sensor and Smartphone

Updated: Apr 27

It is very easy to measure rockwool water content (moisture level) using a soil moisture sensor.

In the following video, we will demonstrate how to install and use the APAS T1 soil moisture sensor, ISHTAR Bluetooth sensor node, and SHUSHAN Mobile app to take moisture readings.

Installing the APAS T1 sensor into rockwool is very easy. Take the following steps to install the sensor:

  1. Pick a corner of the Rockwool and insert the sensor at a 90 degree angle.

  2. Gently, push the sensor into the Rockwool until all of the green blade disappears.

To take moisture readings, take the following steps:

  1. Connect the sensor to the ISHTAR Bluetooth node.

  2. Start the SHUSHAN Mobile app scan for available Bluetooth nodes.

  3. Pick your Bluetooth node and connect.

  4. Wait for the node to connect and sensor data to be available. This shouldn't take more than 15 seconds.

Warning: Inserting the APAS T1 (or any other soil moisture sensor in the market) into the substrate and removing it after taking a measurement is NOT recommended. This method is invasive, inaccurate, and over time might damage both the sensor and plant roots. Please install enough number of sensors permanently in your spots of interest before plant root is fully developed.
